The tea cosy made its appearance in the mid-19th century. Legend has it that an Irish farmer let his woolly hat fall on to the teapot one day. Perhaps he had nodded off while the tea was brewing, but the hat stayed on the pot for a few minutes. When he got around to pouring his tea, the farmer found it was much hotter – and nicer – than he was used to. So his wife knitted a special cover especially for the pot. These days, tea cosies come in an amazing range of designs, from the cute to the outrageous.

Tea experts recommend that you cover the pot with a tea cosy and leave the tea to infuse for 3-4 minutes. Any longer and you´ll ruin the true flavour of the tea, making it taste bitter.

Interesting tea facts:

The typical cup of tea contains less than half the level of caffeine of a typical coffee. One cup contains only around 50mg.

Tea without milk has no calories. Using semi-skimmed milk adds 13 calories per cup, but you also benefit from valuable minerals like calcium.

Four cups of tea with milk provides you with 21% of your daily calcium requirement.

In hot weather tea refreshes you by raising the body temperature momentarily causing perspiration, which cools the skin.
