RHS Camellia Tapestry Cushion
Camellia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Theaceae, native to eastern and southern Asia. They are evergreen shrubs and small trees from 2–20 m tall. The leaves are alternately arranged, simple, thick, serrated, usually glossy, and 3–17 cm long. The flowers are large and conspicuous, 1–12 cm diameter, with (in natural conditions) 5–9 petals; colour varies from white to pink and red, and yellow in a few species. The frit is a dry capsule subdivided into 1–5 compartments, each containing 1–8 seeds. The genus is generally adapted to acidic soils, and does not grow well on chalk or other calcium-rich soils. Most species also have a high rainfall requirement and will not tolerate drought.
RHS Lilly Tapestry Cushion
Lilies are native to the northern temperate regions. Their range extends across much of Europe, the north Mediterranean, across most of Asia to Japan, south to India and south to the Philippines. In the new world they extend from southern Canada through much of the United States. They are commonly adapted to either woodland habitats or sometimes to grassland habitats. A few can survive in marshland. In general they prefer moderately acidic or lime-free soils. Lilies are usually erect leafy stemmed herbs. The large flowers have three petals along with three petal-like sepals often fragrant, and come in a range of colours ranging through whites, yellows, oranges, pinks, reds, purples, bronze and even nearly black. Markings include spots, brush strokes and picotees. The plants are summer flowering.
RHS Orchid Tapestry Cushion
Orchids are the largest and most diverse of the flowering plant families, with over 800 described genera and 25,000 species. Orchids are cosmopolitan in distribution, occurring in every habitat, except Antarctica and deserts. The great majority are to be found in the tropics, mostly Asia, South America and Central America. They are found above the Arctic Circle, in southern Patagonia and even on Macquarie Island, close to Antarctica. Orchids have simple leaves with parallel veins. The plant produces a series of adjacent shoots which grow to a certain size, bloom, then stop growing, to be replaced by the next growth. Plants of this type grow laterally rather than vertically, following the surface of their support.
